Literature Text

I am going to introduce myself by saying one thing: a side affect of life is death. All 50 years of my life have led me to realize this, but I’m not sure why it took me so long. Death is everywhere and comes in forms as simple as squishing a bug. As you lift your hand from the diminutive mess you’ve created you don’t process that the bug you just brutally murdered has already begun to fade into oblivion. I remember. I remember the stormy night that had forever changed my life. His hands were tightly clenched around my wrists but there was nothing he could do, he was as helpless as a fly caught in a trap. Every breath he tried to take brought him closer to his last.
“Dad” my son's voice disturb my thoughts and put them to an end, he sounds serious which concerns me. I glance up from the book I was blankly staring at and raise my eyebrows at him. His body language makes it clear that he’s feeling anxious and wants to speak to me about something.
“Sit down” I suggest to him. He gawks at me for a moment before settling down on the couch. “What’s wrong?” I question him. He twists his wedding ring around his finger, looking at the floor with a troubled expression.
“I saw Mom” his voice lowers to a whisper. I feel a wave of grief and pity wash over me. Andrew has never approached me about this before. His brother had told me many stories about seeing Anabelle in his sleep when he needed her the most, I don’t understand why she would visit him now? I suddenly felt a pang fear strike me like a knife as I realised that the reason Anabelle visited Andrew must not have been a good one He closed his eyes before speaking again “She said something and..”
“And what?! Pick up the pace Andrew!” I impatiently snap at him, feeling just as anxious as he was by now. He snarls at me in return.
“You’ve seen one of those movies right..? With like the guy who’s the chosen one to defeat the big evil guy..? Yeah, I guess thats the situation I’m in right now.” He looks up in thought and wrinkles his nose. He inhales what seems like all of the earth's air “She told me this: “Hope is the only thing that will shine over despair, he who possesses this brightness will be the one who puts an end to a reign of darkness.” and then she just grabbed my hands and was like: “You are he who possesses the light, you are the Warrior of Hope, Andrew… I have never been so proud before” and then I woke up.”
“That’s it..?” I cock my head to the side and frown.
“No.” He grumbles as lets out a disgruntled sigh. He takes a breath to continue what he was saying. “She told me before I woke up that we all had to travel to this place in this big group to stop the bad guy... His name was like Aros or something. But the place she was talking about is actually pretty far…” his voice trailed off. I felt the fur on my shoulders stick up, I narrowed my eyes at him. Was he really going to leave out a crucial detail such as that? How foolish.
“What do you mean by a big group? Shouldn’t you just go alone?”
“A warrior of hope cannot work alone” Andrew spat out mockingly. A growl rumbled in the depths of my throat. “What I mean is that we’re going to have to grab everybody we know that will be willing to help us and set off an a cliche adventure with them, Dad. We’ve seen shitty movies like this before. Can you just talk to Uncle Anderson and everybody body else about this stupid journey I guess I have to go on now???” I felt my blood begin to boil, how dare he treat a prophecy so nonchalantly?! I shake my head and bit my tongue, finding that I was feeling awfully troubled that he was the warrior of hope. I know that I could have done a better job than him at being the said light that was going to shine over darkness, but prophecies are prophecies and when they’re sent from Sancta there is nothing that anyone can change about it. I reluctantly agree to talk to as many people as I can and then leave him by himself in the living room.
